Dietitian
As a Dietitian, my role in a GP practice is to provide individualized nutrition advice to patients with various medical conditions or dietary needs. This includes assessing their nutritional status, educating patients on how to make healthy food choices and giving practical advice to facilitate change.
The positive impact of having a Dietitian in a GP practice is significant. Patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease benefit greatly from dietary interventions that can help manage their condition and prevent further complications. Dietitians can also help patients with weight management, gastrointestinal disorders and other conditions that can be impacted by nutrition.
To me, being a Dietitian in a GP practice means working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide holistic care to patients. We can support GPs and other healthcare specialists such as physiotherapists and mental health practitioners by providing specialized nutritional advice. We take the time to educate patients on how to make sustainable changes to their diet and lifestyle whilst working closely with GPs. This can help reduce the burden on GPs, thus reducing waiting times for an appointment and improve outcomes.
Dietitians have specialized training and a protected title by law. We work with patients to develop practical and achievable goals from evidence-based science. Ultimately, our goal is to empower patients to take control of their health and improve their quality of life through healthy eating habits.
If you would like a referral, please speak with your GP, or self-refer via reception.
